Metabolism

So, your metabolism.  Did you immediately groan in your head and think 'my metabolism is so slow!'  Well, I'm here to get the facts about your metabolism out in the open.  Hopefully the following info will also help you start off on the right foot every morning.

First off...what exactly is our metabolism?  The thing that determines whether we lose weight quickly or not?  The thing that determines how fast we digest our food?  Yes, I have heard people say some interesting things about what a metabolism is.  Personally, the best definition I have come across is:  the body's calorie burning system.  Basically, your metabolism is the word to refer to how your body breaks down substances.  So, how fast or slow your body can burn calories, is also another way to look at it.

Let's look at the facts:
Metabolism is in part based on genes, and what you inherited from your parents.  BUT, it doesn't have to stay that way.  You can speed it up, if you need to, through exercise, eating habits and muscle mass, etc.
Drink water.  When you are drinking enough water throughout the day, you can keep your metabolism running at  it's top speed.
Unfortunately, the more weight you lose, the slower your metabolism goes.  For every pound you're dropping, the slower your metabolism goes.  But, there are lots of ways to counteract this, so don't worry!
Work on building up your muscle mass.  Muscle takes more energy to maintain than fat, so your body will burn more calories maintaining it than it will fat.
Let's not forget exercise.  Basically you want to exercise for the same reasons you build up muscle mass.  With cardio you are getting rid of the fat, and keeping your metabolism elevated.
Eat more meals a day, just make them smaller, or even just a snack.  When you have meals spaced out too far, your body will start to burn muscle mass because it is "starving."  To prevent this and to keep your metabolism moving along, give it something to keep it busy throughout the day.  More importantly, eat breakfast!  It will kickstart your metabolism in the morning.

Below are some images I have collected to support the information that I'm sharing with you.  Definitely take a look since they offer up some more information than what I've included today!
