Be Happy

I was perusing Pinterest and stumbled across this first image.  In general, I just feel like it is simple, straightforward and good points to try to live by.  As for the Dance More, maybe it doesn't quite fit with everything else, but why not?  Dancing is so much fun!  And it's a great way to get your body moving.

Clean up your diet in 5 weeks! (via Chescaleigh) As many of you know, I’ve been making an effort to clean up my diet over the past year to help manage my pesky sensative stomach, and to just adopt a healthier lifestyle. But, it’s not easy to completely overhaul your diet and start eating clean. So I made this fun little graphic today after being inspired by a video on cleaning up your diet in 5 weeks by Sharee, of Funeral for my Fat. Enjoy!

That's all for today.  Have a nice evening!

Stress

My thoughts on stress have always tended to be very negative.  But recently, I've been noticing that the products I produce (and by products I mean classwork, projects for work, etc.) have been exceptional (bragging? yeah, a little bit), even though I was fairly stressed out while they were all in progress...hm.

So, my question is...is stress really that bad for you?  Or are certain stress levels acceptable to live with, if you know how to manage them?  Clearly you can see I'm trying to answer my own question here.  But I'll refer to my second question as more of a hypothesis than a question.

In a simple google search the first article that popped up was this one: http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2009/02/13/who-says-stress-is-bad-for-you.html
While the initial paragraph was fairly alarming, the rest revealed that stress is not as bad for you as all the hype says it is.  It goes into a lot of detail and discusses some experiments that have been conducted, so definitely give it a read if you're interested.  What I pulled from this article is that stress is a hormonal reaction to certain things, as the article says, danger, change or uncertainty, and it is the body's way of making itself able to handle these things.  Another item I pulled out is that you must have control to be able to handle stress.  And by control, it means control over your life and whether or not you actually feel that you are in control.

Just from personal experience, I feel that this was a large part of the reason why I went through my period of depression.  What started out as moderate stress turned into feeling like I completely lacked control over my own life and a sense of hopelessness which for a time led me to feel that I had an inability to take charge of my own future.  It was only once I began to take back control in small portions that I started to feel better.

Some signs that you are experiencing too much stress include: mental slowness/fogginess, getting sick frequently, experiencing more aches and pains, anxiety and irritability and can often lead to more serious issues such as high blood pressure and heart disease.  For more symptom info, check out the Mayo Clinic's website for a brief overview: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/stress-symptoms/SR00008_D

Some other good stress facts that I have learned:  Moderate stress can actually help people to perform tasks more efficiently.  It can also improve memory.  It also may possibly strengthen the immune system, and prevent against diseases and cancers.

My conclusions: Stress may actually be necessary to get through certain events, etc. but you need to maintain control and not let stress completely take over.  The difference seems to be that good stress is short term and bad stress is long term.

So how do we stop stress from taking over?  Check out this site: http://www.mtstcil.org/skills/stress-lt-2.html

1.  Take a step back and evaluate what things stress you out - then come up with a a strategy for managing them better.
2. Recognize what you can change.
3. Put things in perspective and evaluate your reactions to them.
4. Organize!
5. Exercise!
6. Breathe!
7. Surround yourself with people who will support and encourage you.
8. Don't hold things in.
9. Always remember that sometimes you can't actually prevent stress, but you can manage it.

Hope you have a stress-free day!
p.s. check out the poll on your right!

Poll Conclusion and New Poll

At the conclusion of my on-going poll, we have the results of 51 voters....
The Question: On average, how many days a week do you exercise?

The Answers:
7 days: 3%
6 days: 17%
5 days: 19%
4 days: 21%
3 days: 15%
2 days: 7%
1 day: 7%
0 days: 5%

So, to sum up the results...
It is apparent that 4 days is the average amount of days to exercise a week.  It's followed by 5 days, 6 days and 3 days.
These are all great results and pretty much what I expected to see.  And remember, any amount of exercise a week is better than none :)

For my next poll, I want to know...What do you do while you work out?
Answers to choose from: Listen to music, watch tv, read, text, talk (to a work out buddy), a combo of the above, or nothing - I just work out.
If you think I'm missing something, let me know!

Have a great day!

Pull Out Exercise Cards

Here's a thought.  Exercise cards.

Sometimes in magazines you'll find the cards that you can pull out of them that have different things on them.  I have been finding recently that more magazines have these than I realized and I have started pulling them out and keeping them in one place to look through and attempt.  The cards have different exercises on them.  Sometimes the exercises are related, or follow a theme, and sometimes they don't.  It's a fun way to change up your workout if you're getting bored or just need to shake things up a bit.

SELF's 2012 Fitness Survey

I got an email from SELF today advertising a delicious looking fruit cobbler, so I obviously had to go and check the recipe out.  The picture alone was motivation.  While perusing the sight, I started going through the fitness articles (surprise) and found SELF's 2012 Fitness Survey.  I definitely recommend that you take a look and read it over.  There were a lot of great exercise recommendations in there, especially ab exercises. According to SELF, 50% of women say having the toned tummy area is most important, and I would be among them.

Generation Next at BBP Library

Hello readers...so I've been busy, busy at work lately.  Lots to do, but I'm pausing to post something here, which obviously is work-related.

The library I work at has added a new age group for programs, ages 18-26.  We're hoping to draw younger people into the library this way.  It's a great idea, but so far there has been almost no interest.  I'm trying to get the word out about the group and the programs that we're offering this summer.  If you live in my area, check out the facebook page for Generation Next:  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bayport-Blue-Point-Library-Generation-Next/266123120155371

Using a Calendar to Stay Motivated!

I am a person who has always kept a planner so that I can keep my life in order.  It came in particularly handy while I was balancing three jobs and a bunch of other activities.  I have now found another use for it...to keep myself motivated about going to the gym.  I mark down each day that I get myself to the gym in my planner.  I do this on the monthly calendar part.  I use Avery Removable Color Coding Labels: See Through Round Color Coding Labels

Food Pyramid Facts: A Refresher Course

We've learned about the food pyramid our whole lives, but honestly, how much do you really remember about it?  Unless you're in a profession requiring you to know, training for those professions, have a stellar memory, or are just very curious like me, I'd say that there's probably not that many details you can recall.  Well, here is a bit of a refresher course on the food pyramid and it's components.

Perspiration

Girls who don't sweat at the gym make me slightly jealous...but at the same time, it makes me wonder if they're working as hard as I am.  Any thoughts on this?

When You Feel Like Quitting....

This is particularly appropriate for me today...I try to keep in mind all the reasons I started my fitness kick when I am feeling particularly unmotivated (horrible weather today - sometimes it's the smallest things).  Even just looking back over this blog is a big help in that department too.  I learned so much and I am still learning new information all the time.  I love it!

P.S. I Updated!

Check out my updates to the Life's Soundtrack and Book Nook pages!!

Bikini Season

I think that it is safe to say that bikini season has arrived...  The temperature is now more often in the 70s and we'll be hitting the 80s by the end of this month.  I have not yet ventured out in a bathing suit, but I know my time will eventually come.  That's why my focus is very strongly on my abdominal region.  I know that the better my core looks, the more confident I'll be when it comes time to rock the bikini.

Walk, Walk, Walk

Walking is one of the most basic forms of exercise around.  We all know that walking is great for us, but when given the option between walking and driving somewhere...we inevitably choose the car.  Time constraints, laziness, weather, distance etc. all factor into that decision, BUT if you can, you should try to walk instead.

I'm Back!

So, it has been a little while since my last post, excluding yesterday which was my comeback post!  To explain, I have TMJ, so I was dealing with a locked jaw and then I had my wisdom teeth pulled in hopes that this would help... and it did!  I am officially fully recovered and I've been hitting the gym a few times a week in my attempts to get back on track.

A Bit About Vitamins

So, I don't know about the rest of you, but recently I've been wondering if I get enough vitamins daily.  I do not take a multivitamin because they make me nauseous, so I do not have a regular intake of vitamins beyond the food I eat every day.

Some Major Self-Evaluation

So I asked people to re-evaluate their gym habits, and while I sort of did the same, I was not completely honest with myself.  I hemmed and hawed around the edges and refused to look at the real reasons why I haven't been making the best choices for myself.

Some Lessons From the Animals

So I took a trip to the Smithsonian Zoological Park today.  I love animals, particularly Elephants, Pandas and the big cats.  Maybe it's the girl in me, but I get an overwhelming desire to cuddle animals, even the ones that could probably kill me.

So I'm jumping back to a topic that I mention every so often...cleaning.  In this case though, I'm specifically talking about decluttering my room, which is distinctly different.

Healing the Whole

On my About Me page, I talked about healing my whole self and the reasons why I want and need to do this.  I think that the body, mind and soul are all connected, and  in order to become healthier, I need to work on all three, not just one.  Already I have seen the effects as I've worked to make my body healthier.  In certain ways, that has also gone a ways towards healing my mind and soul.  I have also focused a bit on these other two, but it is not as straightforward as obtaining a fit body, and a more positive body-image.

Daily Eating Habits: The Balancing Act

I wanted to take a lot of time with this post because I wanted to offer explanations for some of my food choices and my thoughts on eating.  Writing it out took time because I have never put this into words in any form, so I wanted to make sure it made sense and was informative at the same time.  I'm not sure I actually succeeded though, so you'll just have to bear with me.

Weigh In #8

So officially weighing in again.  It has been 8 weeks, close to a total of 2 months since I started keeping track..  This has been the longest period of exercise and eating properly that I have ever managed and I see no reason to stop now.  I feel great and I think that my weight is in a good place.

Back on Track

Stay motivated, we're more than halfway through January!!  So, it took me a couple weeks to get back on track, but I feel like I am officially there.  I've been excited to hit the gym for the past 4 days in a row and my postponed weigh-in is going to take place tomorrow!

Inspiration and A New Poll!

Posting has been a bit slow for me lately as I get readjusted to my schedule now that vacations have ended.  Yes, it's taken two weeks of readjustment, but I'm getting there.  Recent activity in my social life, while a definite good thing(!), has contributed to the delay in posting.

How I Get Things Done Everyday

Patience and determination are two of the main components to how I make it through my week.  I have a very busy schedule, and 75 work hours to work around.  It takes a lot of organization, preparation, creativity, and commitment.

How to stay motivated...What I've written down here are all the things that constantly motivate me to stick to my lifestyle and stay healthy and fit.

My Gym Routine

On my Sunday post someone commented asking a few questions.  Over the next few days I'm going to attempt to address these in my posts.  I tried to put all the information together, but then it started to look like a novel and I figured I probably won't hold onto people's attention for that long.  So today, I'm going to talk a bit (probably more than a bit)  about my gym routine.

Weigh In #7

So it is officially the end of the 7th week that I have been exercising and eating better.  When I look at the number 7, it doesn't seem that big, but when I look at the difference I have made in my own life, it tells me more than any number.  Always remember that non-scale victories are sometimes more telling than the number you see on the scale.

Lunchboxes Are For Kids

Since I work very long days, I have to be sure to pack enough food for the entire day.  On my busiest days I go from 8am until 12am, a full 16 hours, not counting my travel time.  Sometimes I only work until 6 pm, and weekends I sometimes only go into work at 6 pm.  Either way, I need to make sure that I have enough meals covered to survive my day.

Ringing in the New Year: Weigh In #6

Happy New Year everybody!  I hope your evenings were all better than mine.  I spent New Years Eve at work unfortunately.  I arrived home in time to watch the ball drop, but my chance at having a fun evening was kind of shot at that point.  Oh well, there's always next year...
